Clifton Mill, Clifton Ohio

Clifton Mill 2

The oldest operating grist mill in Ohio, Clifton Mill features one of the largest Christmas displays anywhere.

Located just off Interstate 70 between Columbus and Dayton, the mill features a fine restaurant and an old-time country store.

But it’s also fun in the summer with the millrace and water driving the large millstone.

It was a hot August day when we visited, and that water cascading down from the waterwheel to Clifton Gorge below certainly looked inviting.

Although this started as a digital photograph it required painstaking editing to transform it into the artistic version here. Because the gorge is so narrow, keeping contrast and lightness in the gorge while also keeping color in the sky and the mill itself required reworking.

This is a limited edition print.

Winter Scene, Dawes Arboretum

Through the years, Dawes Arboretum outside Columbus Ohio has been one of my favorite places to make photographs.

The Dawes Arboretum is dedicated to increasing the love and knowledge of trees, history and the natural world. Founded in 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes, The Arboretum was inspired by the couple’s love of trees and nature. Today we remain dedicated to our mission through providing exceptional educational programs and events as well as maintaining incredible horticulture collections on over 1,800 acres of beautiful ground.

I’m not sure whether it’s still true, but at one time Dawes had the longest hedge lettering in the world. This looks down on that lettering on a cold winter’s day.
